Notes for Walter Allen Markham, Jr.:

W. Allen Markham was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, on Jan. 29, 1911, when his Father  was working with Mr. Ballard Company building the Main Line of then C & O Railroad, from Covington, Virginia, to Cincinnati, Ohio.  They moved back to Lowry, Virginia, when Allen was two, and this is where he went to Grade School.

Allen graduated from Bedford High school, and attended Roanoke College, at Salem, Va. where he was a member of The Kappa Alpha Order, and was on the Cheer Leading Squad.  He sold Magazines each summer to get money for school, and told many interesting stories of his experiences.  He met Mary Tom Ashley, on one of his sales trips, and married her in 1934. They lived with Allen's Parents, and went back and forth from Virginia to Florida, until they moved to Okeechobee, Fl. , in 1937, to a new home, and business, which would become one of the largest canning industries in the Southeast.  Allen was active in community affairs and chairman of the War Bond Drives 1942-1945, for Okeechobee, County.   He later became the Legislative Representative, for Okeechobee County, and served at that post for many years.  Allen was Chairman of the Gulf Stream Council of The Boy Scouts of America, and awarded the Silver Beaver on two separate occasions.  Allen  was an avid hunter and fisherman, and excelled at the sport of Turkey Gobbler Hunting.  Allen died in 1995, and is buried at Timber Ridge Baptist Church Cemetery, in  Bedford, County, Virginia.

Mary Markham was active in the civic workings of this small  South Florida Community, and was active also in her church.  It was here that she gave so much of her time to her Church, Civic Work, and the Cub Scout Program.    Mary was a devoted Mother caring for all the  needs of her children, and seeing that  they  grew up in a Christian Environment. In 1949 Mary and Allen built a second home on Markham's Lake, at Lowry, Va.   This is where  they would live in the summer months, when the cannery in Okeechobee, was not running.  Mary was diagnosed as having cancer in 1951, and died eighteen months later.   She is buried in Evergreen Cemetery, in Bedford, Virginia.
