After the Hoover Dike was completed in 1936 the citizenry of the Big Lake Area was much relived from the death and destruction  caused by these killer hurricanes.  It was not until the hurricane of 1947, that the further need for flood control was apparent.  It was the flood damage from this large hurricane that prompted the establishment of South Florida Flood Control District which was organized on October 6, 1947, at the Okeechobee County Courthouse.
