After the Hoover Dike was completed in 1936 the citizenry of the Big Lake Area was much relived from the death and destruction caused by these
killer hurricanes.
It was not until the hurricane of 1947, that the further need for flood control was apparent. It was the flood damage from this large hurricane that prompted the establishment of South
Florida Flood Control
District which was organized on October 6, 1947, at the Okeechobee County Courthouse.
