The
Markham
Family
in
the
Southeastern
United
States
had
its
main
origins
in
Colonial
Virginia.
The
vast
majority
(but
not
all)
of
these
"Markhams"
have
descended
from
a
single
immigrant
who
lived
in
Virginia
in
the
1600's
commonly known
as
Thomas
Markham
of
Henrico
County,
Virginia.
Thomas
was
born
in
London
England
about
1606.
He
departed
Gravesend
for
Virginia
July
24,
1635
on
the
ship
Assurance.
He
married
a
widow
woman
named
Susan
Greenleafe
from
Henrico
County
Virginia
in
1635
and,
together,
they
began
a
cascade
of
American
descendants.
It
appears
that
on
20
Nov
1635,
Thomas
Markham
was
first
granted
a
patent
for
300
acres
of
land
on
the
James
River
at
Four
Mile
Creek,
adjoining
Bayly's
land.
50
acres
came
to
Thomas
for
his
personal
adventure,
and
100
acres
for
the
transport
of
two
servants,
John
Fouke
and
Rich
Whitfield.
150
acres
were
granted
in
right
of
his
wife
Susan
Greenleafe,
relict
of
Robert,
being
50
acres
for
her
personal
adventure
and
100
acres
for
Robert
Greenleafe
her
former
husband
being
an
original
planter.
In 1785, a Great-Grandson of Thomas Markham moved west to Bedford County,
Virginia, with his sons John and Thomas, his name was Arthur Markham,
II. After several years his sons moved further west just across the
"Blue Ridge to Jennings Creek in Botetourt County, Virginia. My
Great-great Grandfather Jessie E. Markham was a grandson of John Markham
one of the sons of Arthur Markham, II.
Today, there are 'Markham's" living in nearly all of the United States, with concentrations existing along the main paths of migration from Virginia into the Southern and Western parts of the country.
