Walter T. Watford came to Okeechobee in 1924 from Madrid, Alabama.  He married Johnnie Dowling and there children were Herman, Howard, Huey, Dowling and Harold Watford.  All of these are deceased with the exception of Dowling (Doc) Watford who is owner with his son Dowling, Jr. of Okeechobee Motor Co.  

Walter Watford built and operated several businesses in Okeechobee, which were, First Pure Oil Bulk Plant Distributor, Pure Oil Service Station, Two garage apartments, and the two story Watford Hotel.  The Watford family has played a large part in the early development of Okeechobee, Florida.
